MOVING FROM MANUAL THERAPY TO MOVEMENT HEALTH: MARK COMERFORDS JOURNEY

19th March 2016

Holland, 9 June 2016: Lecture in the evening about Mark’s work, life & experiences (3 hours with questions from the audience)

Mark Comerford’s passport states his occupation as ‘physiotherapist’; yet expecting all physios to match his skill set, experience and influence would be an error; he is a very rare breed.

Simply put, Mark’s vision, creativity and profound understanding of the human movement system has allowed new ground to be reached in the systematic analysis and management of movement impairments. His considerable talents now find expression in his many roles, including being a founding Director of Movement Performance Solutions (MPS) under which Kinetic Control, TPM Pro and TPM Elite operate.

Those who have watched Mark at work are likely to agree he is the ‘ultimate practical master’ of movement retraining, combining a lightning rapidity of thought and a truly vast multi-disciplinary clinical reasoning knowledge base with an innate talent for exercise delivery.

Mark possesses a special interest in the development of clinically relevant models of movement analysis, retraining, and the understanding of pain’s influence on movement, muscle function and performance. A passionate believer in both the application of diagnostic subgroups of movement dysfunction and the use of clinical reasoning frameworks based on evidence based practice, he has made significant contributions to the elevation of the standards of therapeutic exercise around the world. The Kinetic Control process and education system, a global brand now entering its third decade in supplying innovative post graduate training provides a high profile example of this impact.

More recently, his ongoing work with long-time collaborator Sarah Mottram and other movement specialists around the world has led to the development of The Performance Matrix movement analysis and retraining system, so central to both TPM Pro and TPM Elite. This fleet of movement analysis tools and the movement management approach which it accompanies arguably offers the finest resolution in the identification of uncontrolled movement and the injury risk associated to it. The pain to performance model, so clearly illustrated through the Kinetic Control to Performance Matrix processes is also representative of Mark’s own career.

He himself describes his thirty plus years of experience as ‘diverse’. Working with all levels of pain, dysfunction and disability, from those with a long history of chronic, recurrent musculo-skeletal pain and a ‘desperate look’ in their eyes, to elite level sporting competitors and teams, he has spanned the full movement impairment spectrum. As a principle partner in Performance Rehab, (Brisbane, Australia), he keeps his ‘hands and head active’, working clinically with the multi-dimensional approach to the management of musculoskeletal pain, dysfunction and elite level performance his career has championed. At this elite end, his performance and rehab consultancy has included the Chicago Bulls (NBA), Washington Wizards (NBA), West Side Dance & Physical Therapy (New York City Ballet), Vermeil Sport & Fitness (USA) and Athletes’ Performance (USA).

His exceptional ability to systemise the complexities of movement and its interactions with both pain and performance is world renowned and continues to be globally sought. Such a reputation draws great attention to his convention appearances and journal article output focussing on the integration of local and global muscle training to enhance joint stability and movement control.

His writing collaborations with colleague Sarah Mottram have provided some of the key academic publications on the topic of movement control over the last 20 years, work that continues to prove seminal to much contemporary literature.

Alongside ongoing consultancy and training commitments, he continues to provide teaching and support for both undergraduate and postgraduate university education in the UK and Australia and is currently on the board of Sports Medicine, Australia (Queensland).

Originally educated in his homeland of Australia back in the early 1980s, Mark’s certainly quick to offer generous acknowledgment to the guidance and mentorship of exceptional individuals such as Shirley Sahrmann, Gwen Jull, Paul Hodges and Lorimer Mosley.

This generosity extends to his development of others, always hugely enthusiastic to share the skills and knowledge of clinical insight, clinical reasoning, and therapeutic application he has continued to evolve from the work of these inspirations.
